Sam LaPorta Isn’t Hiding His Frustration Over Stalled Lions Extension Talks

Trouble may be brewing in Detroit over tight end Sam LaPorta’s contract. The Lions and LaPorta reportedly broke off extension talks earlier this month after nothing materialized, even after negotiations spilled into the second month of the regular season.

On Wednesday’s airing of the Pardon My Take podcast, LaPorta said he’s frustrated with the stalled contract talks and is willing to get paid somewhere else after the season.

“I break my f****** back for this team. And then I’m going out there this year, and I’m ballin’, and maybe they’re just not showing the love,” LaPorta said. “In three months, if I don’t get to wear the Honolulu Blue and play for the Lions anymore, it’s going to be all good. I’ll go get paid somewhere else.”

Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff (16) celebrates his touchdown with Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta (87), and Detroit Lions wide receiver Jameson Williams (9) against the Seattle Seahawks at Ford Field in Detroit, Tuesday, Oct. 1, 2024.

LaPorta is having a solid season for Detroit, entering Week 7 with 27 catches (on 37 targets) for 316 yards and three touchdowns. While he hasn’t been able to recreate his rookie success in 2023, when he caught 86 passes for 889 yards and 10 touchdowns, he’s on pace to catch 92 passes for 1,074 yards and 10 touchdowns this season. That would set new career highs in receptions and receiving yards, and tie his career-best touchdown mark.

As LaPorta said on Pardon My Take, if that production isn’t enough to land a new deal, he will be a free agent this spring and can explore options elsewhere.

LaPorta suffered a vertebral bruise and herniated disc in November last year, which required surgery to repair, ending his season with eight games remaining. Before the season-ending back injury last season, LaPorta had missed only one game with the Lions: a Week 11 matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024 due to a shoulder AC joint sprain.

Detroit drafted LaPorta in 2023, filling the void at tight end after trading T.J. Hockenson to the Minnesota Vikings in November 2022. I would be floored if the Lions considered trading LaPorta ahead of the NFL trade deadline, with them in a divisional race and their only other tight ends being Brock Wright, Tyler Conklin, and Jackson Meeks.

When LaPorta went down in 2025, Wright became the team’s No. 1 tight end. He finished the season with 14 receptions for 108 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games. The sixth-year tight end has five catches for 31 yards in five games this season.

LaPorta is clearly frustrated by the lack of a deal or discussions about a new one, and that likely won’t change this season, making this a situation to monitor in the offseason.
