VICTOR, N.Y. — Upstate New York’s only wheelchair rugby team, the Western New York Wreckers, hosted its annual Wrecking Ball tournament on Sunday at Pinnacle Athletic Campus.
Four players from each team used modified wheelchairs to smash into each other while trying to get a ball across the goal line. The sport was once called “murderball” because of its intense, physical nature.
Some athletes said the sport captures the feeling of other intense sports like hockey and football. It was designed for athletes with limitations in at least three limbs or their torso area.
Since the Wreckers were founded in 2013, more than 60 players have tried the sport with the team. The Wrecking Ball tournament brought in eight teams from across the Mid-Atlantic, including two from Canada.
“It’s great because not only normally you’re just with your team all year round, but to be able to compete against other guys and how they play, and you can pick their brains while you’re playing and see what they do, it makes you better,” Dawson Broad with the Wreckers said. “You may come up short sometimes, but it definitely helps your own gameplay to see how other people do things and maybe something you’ve never thought about,” said Dawson Broad, who’s with the Wreckers.
The Wreckers finished in fourth place. The winner was the London Ontario Annihilators.
