Who steps up for Alabama with Coleman-Williams sidelined?

During Saturday’s 20-17 loss to new No. 1 Georgia, Alabama star wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams left on two separate occasions with injury.

Late in the first half, Coleman-Williams went down with a lower extremity injury on a jump ball that sidelined him for the rest of the first half.

He returned in the third quarter and even caught a pass, although the normally light-on-his-feet shifty wideout was noticeably gimpy.

Early in the fourth quarter, he went down after taking a shot to the head from Bulldogs safety KJ Bolden, who dislodged the ball.

Coleman-Williams left with what was later revealed as a head injury and did not return to the game.

Sophomore Derek Meadows replaced the injured Coleman-Williams for the rest of the night, finishing with one catch for 18 yards.

The exact timetable for the junior is unclear, with head coach Kalen DeBoer detailing on Monday, Oct. 12 that he more than likely will not play vs. No. 14 Tennessee this week.

With Coleman-Williams out of the lineup, Lotzier Brooks is expected to step into the number one receiver role against the Volunteers.

“[Coleman-Williams] is doing good, just trying to get better, trying to get back,” Brooks said. “It’s going to be a little while, but we’ve just got to go 1-0. Next man up.”

Brooks is tied with Coleman-Williams with a team high with 23 receptions for 389 yards — second on the team — and one touchdown this season.

Despite his injury, Brooks detailed that Coleman-Williams is still being a leader even without being able to suit up.

“He can’t be in practice right now. He always texts us before we go to practice,” Brooks said. “Always gives us a little speech before practice. I just appreciate him.”

Anytime you lose a star player, it hurts a team, but for a player like Coleman-Williams, who has gone through so much scrutiny from media and fans over the past year due to his inconsistent play, it hurts even more.

After a sophomore slump that saw him lead the nation in drops, Coleman-Williams has logged just one all season. His one drop came on his first target of the season against East Carolina — he finished with five catches for 130 yards.

He would go on to log at least one touchdown in three straight games before the Georgia game, his longest streak since he opened his freshman year with five straight games with a touchdown or more.

At the end of the day, Alabama will need someone to step up for the lost talent if they are going to “get right” against rival Tennessee this weekend.

I would keep an eye on the aforementioned sophomore Meadows and NC State transfer Noah Rogers to step up on the road and get the Crimson Tide offense rolling again.
