The investigation and arrest
Officers responded to the Protein Pit Stop on West Main Street around 1 a.m. after a driver flagged them down to report a broken window. Police said they began reviewing surveillance footage from local cameras and the city’s Blue Light system.
Shortly after 6 a.m., officers found and arrested Arroyo near State Street and Lyell Avenue. Police said they found property stolen from the Protein Pit Stop during the arrest.
Security footage and co-owner reaction
Mike Trippany, a co-owner at the Protein Pit Stop, shared security footage with News10NBC. In the video, a man dressed in all black is seen walking with a cart, and about 15 minutes later, a man is seen leaving with a box.
Trippany said a cash register with $100 inside was stolen. The crime came as a shock to him because he was in Kentucky when he learned about it.
“From my partner. He was, blowing up my phone at, three in the morning and, telling me, honestly, I had it on mute, but, I didn’t see it till I woke up at around 7 a.m. and, saw a bunch of texts and, give him a call as soon as possible,” Trippany said.
Previous crime
Police said Arroyo also stole a car on Oct. 6 near East Avenue and Broadway after someone delivering food left the car running. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office tried to stop the car around 2 a.m. on Oct. 7 before Arroyo ran off toward Maple and Child streets.
What officers found
Police said Arroyo ran away, but officers found a stolen cash register and other stolen items during that investigation.
What’s next for the business?
Trippany said the Protein Pit Stop opened about a month ago with the goal of giving downtown Rochester more healthy options. He said the burglary will not deter them, but they might make changes such as going cashless.
“I just want to make sure that my employees that are there, they’re protected. And make sure that we’re always looking out for their best interests. And if not having cash means, you know, more safety for them and for the people in the building. And I’ll certainly go that way if I need to,” Trippany said.
Where is Arroyo now, and what’s next for him?
Police said Arroyo is being held without bail at the Monroe County Jail and is also charged with grand larceny for the stolen car. He was on parole from a 2019 arrest for multiple burglaries in downtown Rochester.
Police are still investigating whether Arroyo is connected to other recent downtown restaurant burglaries.
