Emie Vandiver is a senior majoring in biology from Town Creek, Alabama, running for University of Alabama Homecoming Queen 2026.
Q: What are your involvements on and off campus?
A: My involvements on and off of campus include, on-campus, being an Office of Undergraduate Research ambassador, and that opportunity has allowed me to connect with so many students. When I came to campus, I didn’t know anything about research, and so being able to mentor new students as they go through the process of getting involved has been so highlighting and so defining in my experience here on campus. I also serve as vice president for our Mortar Board chapter here on campus. Being in the Mortar Board National Honor Society has allowed me to connect with so many just driven and well-rounded individuals who are also very motivated and passionate. And also off-campus, I was involved with Reading Allies in Tuscaloosa, where I got to mentor grade school students and help them reach their goals.
Q: What made you decide to run for Homecoming Queen?
A: As a freshman, I never would have seen myself up here. I didn’t really know anything about it, and I feel like deciding to run for homecoming queen serves as a testament to how much the University has allowed me to grow as a person and as an individual.
Q: What is your platform, and why did you decide to run on said platform?
A: My platform is about bringing advocacy and awareness to Down syndrome and just overall special needs education. I’m an older sister to a younger brother that has Down syndrome, and watching him grow up and learn and interact with his peers has really inspired me that everyone deserves to feel loved and supported and seen and heard.
Q: How have you served the community in your time as a student here?
A: I’ve served the community through various ways. Here on campus, I was a part of the founding of the Girl Staters at UA student organization, and also served as the inaugural vice president. Definitely seeing an opportunity and figuring out a way to serve the community and better enrich the connections here at UA, that’s been a big part of my experience here. I have also served through different community health outreaches with the Medicine and Community student organization that I’m a member of here on campus. They just got done with their big breast cancer awareness 5K event, which was just so incredible and so phenomenal, and it was so special to get to be a part of. I just really enjoy serving the community here in Tuscaloosa.
Q: Why do you believe you’re the best choice for Homecoming Queen?
A: I believe that I’m the best choice for Homecoming Queen because I’m all about empowering other individuals to feel like they are seen and they are heard and they are valued. I believe that this starts with having those deep conversations with them, getting to know other people and what they’re passionate about and what unique talents they bring to the table. So I believe that everyone has something special that can be seen and offered to this wonderful campus. And I believe that this campus gives us so many resources, and I believe that being well informed about those resources can help others reach their fullest potential. So as a homecoming queen, I would definitely use those abilities to help.
