Rochester is looking for a construction proposals as the convention center moves toward its next phase

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The city of Rochester is moving forward with plans to modernize the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center.

The $59.6 million project is funded by New York state and is part of the ROC the Riverway plan. Construction began two years ago and is expected to be finished by the end of 2026. Now, the city is opening up the next phase of design to a new construction firm.

Don Jeffries, CEO of Visit Rochester, said his team books about 110 meetings and conventions a year and acts as the sales arm of the convention center.

“Tourism is about $1.5 billion in Monroe County alone, 18,500 jobs–about 100 million in local taxes, so it’s a really big deal. We are really excited about this,” Jeffries said.

Jeffries said modernizing the center is exciting because more events mean more tourism downtown. Downtown revitalization goes hand in hand with marketing the convention center as a premier event space.

The city is seeking a construction management and inspection firm to oversee upgrades to nearly every facet inside the building, including lighting, acoustics, plumbing, kitchen infrastructure and accessibility features. The project will also redesign the skyways to improve access to nearby hotels, parking and restaurants.

Jeffries says the convention center already receives positive reviews from event goers, and modernizing its capabilities will help attract larger events.

“We hired a couple extra sales people to do the conventions, because the ROI to the community with these conventions is terrific. You know, they stay in our hotels, they eat in our restaurants, they– they do shopping and so it’s a lot. And so in the last several years, we’ve really focused on the meeting and convention business,” Jeffries said.

Proposals for the construction management and inspection role are due by noon Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2026. More information is available here.
