Ever since Caleb Williams went down in Week 2 against the Vikings, recovery projections have been a bit of a roller coaster. At first, we all assumed the worst. The injury looked bad in real time, and most of us (myself included) thought his Achilles had popped, thus keeping him out until next season at the very earliest.

Then, we got some hope. Later that afternoon, Caleb was seen walking around the Bears locker room with only a slight limp, and that let us cross the Achilles tear off the list. The following morning, The Ringer’s Tom Pelissero reported that the Bears’ QB avoided a serious injury, and that with the extra day leading into a Monday Night Football showdown with the Eagles, it wasn’t impossible he’d play. That didn’t turn out ot be the case, but at least the Bears avoided the worst-case scenario.

Ultimately, we met in the middle. Caleb wasn’t lost for the season. Instead, he was dealing with what was reported to be a Grade 2 strain, which usually means about 3-4 weeks on the shelf.

Well, after Sunday’s matchup in Green Bay, we’ll be past that three-week mark. So, can we start thinking about a Caleb Williams return?

When Will We See Caleb Williams Back On The Field?

On Wednesday, Luis posted a Caleb update sharing info from the NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Rapoport reported that Williams is still “a couple of weeks away” but could return to practice next week. If Caleb returns to the practice field next week, I think there’s an obvious “hopeful” return date.

In my mind, if it wasn’t going to be this Sunday against the Packers, Week 7’s Thursday Night Football matchup at home against the New England Patriots on Oct. 22 always made a lot of sense to me.

Could he be ready for Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons? Maybe. But would it make a whole lot of sense for a quarterback coming off a serious hamstring strain to play two games in five days? Absolutely not. If I had to guess based on the information at hand, we’ll see Caleb Williams return to practice, start ramping things up a bit next week, sit in Week 6 against Atlanta, then benefit from the lighter practice week leading into Thursday Night Football against the Patriots.

When the news broke that Williams would be week to week, I thought a return for this Sunday’s matchup against the Packers was always the optimistic (granted, maybe unrealistic) target date. In hindsight, though, it was never likely to happen. Sure, Caleb wants to play the Packers. But hamstrings can be tricky, and if they don’t heal properly, they can linger all year. As much as the Bears would like him on the field at Lambeau, having him at full strength for the second half of the season is more important than dealing with a lingering hamstring.

Of course, things can change. But based on what has been reported and how the schedule looks, that Thursday Night Football matchup seems like a logical target date, especially with the extra rest afterward. Plus, who wouldn’t like to see a Caleb Williams vs. Drake Maye matchup?
