After four games, the Denver Broncos offense will have Sean Payton more involved in play-calling going into Sunday’s game against the Los Angeles Chargers.
Denver Broncos’ Sean Payton to take a more involved role in play-calling
The Broncos offense has regressed so far through the first four weeks of the season compared to last year, especially in the points-per-game department.
On top of that, the Broncos have not been able to run the ball well, averaging 81 yards per game on the ground, which puts them at 29th in the league, compared to last year, when they were averaging 143 yards per game on the ground going into Week 5.
Since Sunday’s loss to San Francisco, Sean Payton has been asked several times, including after Sunday’s game, about play-calling and whether or not he would intervene.
“I think our focus needs to be more on the specifics and the detail of each play regardless,” Payton said Wednesday. “I think [Offensive Coordinator] Davis [Webb] is very fast and quick and understands what we’re doing. So I appreciate the question, but I think that the most important job I have is really evaluating the why’s. I think collectively we all after a game… After a four-game sample size… All right, certainly this isn’t championship football or what we see, how quickly can we correct those things?”
Since Payton spoke to the media on Wednesday, reports have come out from ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Ian Rapoport, both stating that the Broncos will be taking a more collaborative play-calling approach this week, with HC Sean Payton having an increased role in the process and OC Davis Webb continuing with a significant game-planning and game-day role.
What that truly means, we’ll find out Sunday. This season, Webb has had the primary responsibility for the offensive game-planning, and Payton has had involvement in that and has had some say in that as well, from what I understand.
The only change it could be is that Payton does take back the actual play-calling, because prior to this coming out, Denver’s approach on offense has been collaborative between Webb and Payton behind the scenes, while Webb physically calls the plays on Sunday.
Perhaps Payton will address the media briefly today before Webb is scheduled to speak.
