Arunachal Pradesh will not field a team in the 2026-27 Vinoo Mankad Trophy after an ongoing legal dispute left the state cricket association unable to complete team selection and preparations. The side was scheduled to face Sikkim in the Plate Group at the KIIT Cricket Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Thursday.
Six district associations alleged violations of rules and procedures in the Arunachal Cricket Association’s executive elections and sought a re-election. The Gauhati High Court-Itanagar Bench heard the matter in September, but its interim stay on the association’s functioning remains in place.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the state would not participate in some age-group tournaments because of the legal dispute. He said the court order prevented the association from handling team selection and preparations for the Vinoo Mankad Trophy.
“We have seen that Arunachal Pradesh is not fielding teams in some of the age-group tournaments. From what we have gathered, there is a court case going on in the Gauhati High Court-Itanagar Bench. There is also an interim stay on the functioning of the Arunachal Cricket Association,” Saikia told Sportstar.
“Because of the internal bickerings between the two factions, there is litigation and a stay order regarding the functioning of the association. As a result, nobody could take up the matter of team selection or preparation, and ultimately the team will not be playing in the age-group tournament,” Saikia said.
Six district associations — Lower Siang, Upper Subansiri, Kamle, Tawang, West Siang and Papum Pare — had challenged the conduct of the ACA state executive elections. They disputed the election of president Nabam Vivek and other office-bearers and demanded a fresh election.
BCCI Rules Lead to Match Forfeiture
Arunachal Pradesh’s absence will result in a forfeit, with the scheduled opponents awarded the match under BCCI playing conditions. Section 16.2.1.2 states that the BCCI Match Referee can award the match to the opposition if a team refuses to play.
The side was scheduled to begin its Plate Group campaign against Sikkim on October 8, followed by a match against Nagaland on October 10. The withdrawal therefore affects its opening fixtures in the tournament, with points set to go to the opponents under the competition rules.
The BCCI has previously appointed committees to oversee cricketing operations in state associations such as Bihar, Rajasthan, and Jammu and Kashmir after court directions. However, Devajit Saikia said the board cannot take similar action in the state while the current case remains before the court.
“As far as the BCCI is concerned, it cannot step into the matter right now because the matter is sub judice and, till now, the court has not appointed any administrator. The BCCI on its own will not step into the matter when the litigation is going on in the court, and until the matter is resolved,” Saikia said.
Arunachal Pradesh’s Ranji Trophy Participation In Doubt
The administrative crisis could also affect the state’s Ranji Trophy campaign, which begins on October 11. Arunachal Pradesh is in the Plate Group and is scheduled to start its campaign against Nagaland at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Devajit Saikia admitted that there are concerns over whether the team will be able to field a side for the opening match.
“I have an apprehension about what will happen to the Arunachal Pradesh team when the Ranji Trophy begins on October 11. I cannot say at this moment what will happen in the first match and whether they will be able to field a team or not,” he said.
Arunachal Pradesh, along with other northeastern states, became part of BCCI-affiliated domestic tournaments in 2018 after the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators granted them full membership.
