The Chicago Med Season 11 finale left us with happy news: The healthy birth of Hannah (Jessy Schram) and Archer’s (Steven Weber) baby daughter. But it also had a bit of a cliffhanger, as Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) was being forced out of her job by board member Miranda Lewis and was told to turn in her resignation. Will she succumb, or will she fight? What will Season 12 look like?
“There will be conflict, there will be medical stories, there will be unrequited love,” Chicago Med showrunner Allen MacDonald exclusively tells Parade. “I always love when we pace up the show and I’m always interested in doing that, and I think that we have done that successfully, but I always want to push it a little more. I just think that dramatically we’re going to push even harder next year.”
When Season 12 begins, Sharon has been replaced by Valerie Sloan, who cares more about the bottom line than about patient care, according to the ED staff, especially Dean Archer, but Sharon is still fighting, she hasn’t resigned.
“Well, it’s just everybody dealing with a new world,” MacDonald explains. “All our doctors and staff and nurses, when we come in to the season premiere, I was trying to do it on the page, and director, producer Anna Dokoza was doing it with the directing, that we’re in a new world now. You come into that hospital, you come in with Sharon Goodwin’s replacement. There’s a vibe going on that’s different than before. The hospital seems to be overrun in a way that we usually don’t see, and there’s a new doctor there that doesn’t know who Mrs. Goodwin is.”
So if there’s a theme for the season, it’s venturing into the unknown.
With that tease, and more below, here’s what we know about Season 12 of Chicago Med:

“I think that it was Ashlei’s choice to go and that there were other opportunities that she was looking forward to jumping into,” MacDonald shares. “And it was impossible for her to do both things. So I think that what just ended up happening is it just was a matter of, like, not being able to do everything.”

So far, we know that Dr. Theo Rabari left Gafney after it was revealed that he was diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy). Dr. Charles wasn’t going to reveal the diagnosis, and he told Theo that, but Theo withdrew his application for Dr. Charles’ job anyway. That said, someone did reveal the diagnosis and Sharon Goodwin is getting the blame for it right now.
What happened at the end of Chicago Med Season 11?
The Season 11 finale was jam-packed.
The hospital was on lockdown when a prisoner who was being treated for a leg wound escaped and overpowered one of the security guards and took his gun. He took Dean Weber hostage but later was captured.
Because the hospital was on lockdown and another obstetrician couldn’t get in, Hannah had to deliver a baby while she was undergoing contractions for the birth of her own daughter. Also, because he was a hostage, Dean was late getting to the birth, but he made it just in time. Both babies were delivered safely.
The medication for the trial that Frost’s father was on stopped working, and as he was on his deathbed, he asked Frost to forgive him, which he did. Frost later told his mother that he didn’t realize that he still loved his father despite everything his father had done.
Mitch Ripley, knowing that Caitlin Lenox tested positive for the prion gene, told Caitlin that he’d rather have one more day with her than a lifetime with someone else. He loves her.
Daniel’s job was saved when Theo quit, but in a twist, Miranda, the board member who was trying to out Daniel and get Theo in, told Sharon Goodwin she had until the end of the day to turn in her resignation because Miranda believes that Sharon broke HIPAA and released Theo’s medical diagnosis that he has antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy).

Are there any spoilers for Chicago Med Season 12?
Here’s more from our chat with MacDonald and also a few tidbits from Jessy Schram.
Valerie Sloan
“She very much is under the tutelage of Miranda Lewis, who has been a longtime foe of Sharon Goodwin and is the reason why that Sharon Goodwin is no longer in that position,” MacDonald says. “Sharon Goodwin is not on suspension. Rather than resigning or allowing Miranda to put her on suspension, she agreed to go on paid leave pending an investigation. So right now, Goodwin does work for the hospital still, but Miranda’s holding all the cards and seems to be winning that battle.”
Sharon Goodwin
“She is going to have to fight for her job now,” MacDonald shares. “Sharon is a very empathetic, kind, caring person, but you also don’t want to mess with her. Sharon means what she says at the end, ‘If you want a fight, that’s what you’re going to get,’ and that is the intention moving into next season.”
Annie, the new fourth year resident
“Annie is an excellent physician,” MacDonald says. “She’s very ambitious. She’s a little tricky personally. She has a very harsh side to her and she at times has a very loose relationship with the truth because she is so competitive. I’m not saying she’s a liar. That’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying that she will twist the truth to her advantage. And she also has a slightly different view on where the ethical line is on some things compared to some of the people that she is now working with.”
John Frost on his mental health after forgiving his father
“There’s a weight lifted off his shoulders,” MacDonald says. “I think the past has always been something he’s run away from, that he thought he didn’t need to deal with it but it was actually weighing him down more because he wasn’t. We’ve spent the last two seasons with him slowly confronting the past and growing from the processing of it, and now I believe next season he’s going to move on. There will be other challenges next season for Dr. John Frost, but as far as the past and Nick of Time and Ainsley, those are things we’ll always make reference to, but I feel like we’re closing the book on that, on the past, and now he’s going to move forward.”
Hannah Asher on motherhood
“Hopefully a good [mother],” Schram says. “I think that there’ll be many elements that could be played. Her sister was kind of her mother figure in her life, so I think that she has a lot of desires, and probably a lot of pressure she’s put on herself to be a perfect mom, whatever that looks like, and, obviously, will still be working full time. So, I think that there’s a lot of pressures and a lot of things that she knows in her heart how she wants to be, and probably a lot of expectations that she has on herself.
“I imagine Dean to be more the one that’s going to give the baby everything and Hannah’s going to have to put the hammer down. I definitely see that being the dynamic with this coparenting element or within the relationship, but I think that she probably will be very scared but also naturally really take it on. I think that Hannah has always yearned to have that belonging, to not be alone, because she’s been alone for a while and still to a certain degree up until her dad returned, she’s been alone. So, Mabel’s her family, and I think that naturally she’s going to have a place to pour all the love and all the connection that she’s always wanted to have, but maybe she didn’t trust herself enough to have because of her past.”
Mitch Ripley/Caitlin Lenox on entering the prion trial
“I do think that’s possible, yes,” MacDonald says. “I think that this disclosure between them at the end of the season, she will have a more positive attitude moving into next season and will be wanting to embrace life in a healthier way. She thought she was embracing life this season, but she was really being self-destructive.”
Hannah on being a surrogate for Lizzie
“We have a positive outcome of a delivery and a baby that’s healthy, and really to be honest, her own delivery was very uneventful other than Dean being a little late,” Schram says. “It was the pre-labor that was very eventful while in it, but it was healthy and it was the best case scenario of what she could have had, there were no complications. So, it could alter the way she thinks of it, but I think going through this process obviously makes her grow and makes life feel a little bit different. So yeah, I’d be really curious if she would be open to the idea of being a surrogate, especially so quickly after giving birth to Mabel, so we’ll see.”
And MacDonald adds, “I think that’s a fantastic question because the one hanging chad in Hannah’s life is her sister Lizzy. We even brought Lizzy back for an episode this season but we cut her out because of time, but also because it was a scene between her and Archer actually, it wasn’t with Hannah. The reason we cut it out, or I cut it out, was because I felt like we were playing a vibe that we had already seen before with Hannah, and that the next time we see Lizzy I want it to feel different. We definitely intend to delve back into that story next season, and we love Erin Anderson who play Lizzy.”
