UNC baseball head coach Scott Forbes and his staff have agreed to contract extensions, with Forbes’ new deal keeping him in Chapel Hill through the end of the 2032 season. The terms of the assistants’ deals were not shared by the school. Forbes’ extension is his second in the span of six months; he signed one in March which ran through 2031.

The 2026 season was Forbes’ sixth as head coach after a long tenure as an assistant under former head coach Mike Fox. In Forbes’ six seasons in charge, UNC has averaged more than 42 wins per season, reached the NCAA Tournament every year, made two trips to the Men’s College World Series in Omaha and won three ACC championships (one regular season, two tournaments). The 2026 season was one of the best in program history, as the Diamond Heels won 54 games (their most since 2013) and reached the College World Series finals for just the third time ever.
The 2026 season saw several UNC players earn honors and reach the professional ranks. Freshman pitcher Caden Glauber was named ACC and National Freshman of the Year, while six players were selected in that summer’s Major League Baseball Draft. The Boston Red Sox picked shortstop Jake Schaffner in the draft’s first round, making him the program’s 27th first-round pick. UNC has produced a first-round pick in each of the last three drafts, and the 2026 Draft saw four players picked in the top 100 for the first time in program history. Overall, in Forbes’ head coaching tenure he has coached 13 All-Americans, 34 All-ACC honorees and 27 MLB Draft picks.
In a statement, UNC athletic director Steve Newmark called Forbes “an integral part of Carolina baseball’s sustained excellence.”
“It was a priority for our department to extend Scott’s contract and recognize the tremendous job he and his staff have done leading this program,” Newmark said. “They have established Carolina as one of the premier programs in the country, and just as importantly, have developed outstanding student-athletes who are successful in the classroom and in the community.”
The 2026 calendar year has seen an increased financial commitment on the university’s part toward the baseball program. Along with Forbes’ two contract extensions, the program also received an anonymous $9 million gift toward its operating endowment in January, with the donor promising to match gifts from fans to grow the endowment to $25 million. In June, as the Diamond Heels were competing in Omaha, UNC and The Rams Club introduced the Baseball Excellence Fund to “help support the continued success” of the program. The fund provides “immediate, unrestricted support for Carolina Baseball,” per its website, and allows it “to respond quickly to its most pressing needs while also taking advantage of opportunities that strengthen its competitive position.”
The 2026 season was also the first in which UNC worked with a Trajekt pitching machine, technology which prior to then was only used in Major League Baseball. Carolina became the first college program to use the machine.

In a media availability earlier in September, Forbes noted that the program has nearly sold out of season tickets for 2027, while also envisioning more improvements to Boshamer Stadium. Forbes expressed his hope that the stadium would add more seating, as well as special lights which could “blink Carolina Blue” when the team hits home runs.
“I am grateful to Chancellor [Lee] Roberts, Steve Newmark, the Board of Trustees and the Board of Governors for their continued support and enhanced investment in this program,” Forbes said in a statement. “We talk about it all the time within our program that it is an honor and privilege to be at UNC and it is truly a privilege to serve our players, this university and the athletic department daily. The program will always be about the players, and our staff is humbled by the opportunity to continue to serve them.”
Forbes’ staff grew by two recently, as he promoted former players Kyle Datres and Brandon Martorano to full-time roles as player development coaches in August. Both Datres and Martorano were part of the team’s staff last season as undergraduate assistants. Bryant Gaines, Jesse Wierzbicki, Scott Jackson and Jason Howell all return as well, as does Director of Baseball Operations Dave Arendas, General Manager Carter Hicks and Head Athletic Trainer Terri Jo Rucinski. UNC has begun fall practice and recently hosted Charlotte for a pair of scrimmages at Boshamer Stadium. The Diamond Heels will host Walters State Oct. 2 before taking on NC State at Durham Bulls Athletic Park Oct. 16. The full 2027 schedule and updated ticket information will be released later in the fall, the program said.
