ALBANY, N.Y. — New York State will start mailing out energy rebate checks for up to $200 next week. The state says the checks will go to 8.2 million households between Sept. 21 and the end of December.
The $1 billion funding for the checks comes from this year’s state budget. During a visit in Rochester, Gov. Kathy Hochul said the checks aim to offset the rising costs of energy. News10NBC’s Jennifer Lewke pressed the governor on what else she plans to do to tackle high energy bills.
You’re eligible for a rebate check if you filed your income taxes as a full-time New York State resident in 2024. The checks will not go out to anyone claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return.
Joint filers with incomes below $150,000 a year will get a $200 check. Joint filers making between $150,000 and $300,000 will get $150. Single filers with incomes below $150,000 will get a $100 check. If you filed your taxes, there’s no need to apply.
