Dermot O'Leary has spoken about speculation that The X Factor could return to screens and whether he'd be up for stepping back in as host.
Rumours began circulating last month that the classic talent competition was poised for a "modern makeover" at ITV.
The singing contest, devised and spearheaded by Simon Cowell, began airing in 2004 and was a cultural powerhouse in the UK for several years, attracting massive viewership and launching the career of numerous artists.
Among the most successful from the series were One Direction, Little Mix, JLS, Leona Lewis, Alexandra Burke and Olly Murs, with average ratings peaking in 2010, when 17.7 million tuned in to see Matt Cardle crowned winner.
The show was eventually scrapped in 2020 following celebrity and band spin-offs and gradually declining viewing figures over its last decade on air.
The Sun recently claimed that ITV and Talkback Thames are in talks for a revival of a show that would recruit a younger judging panel, with the intention of establishing the show in the minds of a new generation.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, the show's former host Dermot O'Leary said of the rumours: "I don't know what I can tell you because I don't know anything."
He continued: "Do you know what's interesting? I have been thinking about it. It's six years since it was on air which doesn't sound like that much of a long time, but the world has changed and the music's changed, and how we communicate and how we watch things has changed so much in those six years.
"I'm fascinated as to what they'll do if they do bring it back. It'd have to be, in many ways, a very different show [but] you still want the nostalgia of how it was in the first place."
View oEmbed on the source websiteHe added: "When I started on that show – Simon, to be fair to him, used to get frustrated with it – it was always people turning up saying, 'I wanna be a star, tell me what you want me to be'. That always used to irk him.
"As it progressed and music became more democratised, people would turn up and say, 'Well, I've got my own album and I'm on YouTube and I've written 24 songs but I need a platform'. So I think however it comes back, if it does come back, that's how it will have to come back."
As to whether he would be up for returning to the show as its host once again, O'Leary gave a classic response: "Never say never."
Good Morning Britain's Susanna Reid then playfully asked him if anyone had said he was too old for the revival to which he replied: "No, no one's told me that!"
Whether The X Factor will be returning to our screens at any point in the future and when that could be remains to be seen.
