That doesn’t excuse the outcome – or the blown saves before it – but it’s hardly like he’s become unpitchable like some of the other relievers this year.
To that end, the Cubs are just going to have to figure out how to get enough of these guys right to survive, because comprehensive outside solutions aren’t realistic at the moment.

The guys he has available are the guys he has available. He’ll make the best lemonade he can. At present, it tastes really, really bad.
The Cubs pitching staff – at all levels – has been absolutely ravaged by injuries this year to a degree that I think still goes understated. That has led not only to key absences, but also to underperformances and guys pitching outside of a normally-expected level/role. It doesn’t excuse the pitchers (they have to do their job), and it doesn’t excuse the front office (their job is to choose the right players in the first place, and health is a factor in those choices). But it acknowledges the reality of where the Cubs are right now.
Hopefully everyone can exhale today, and then try again. Maybe a few guys get on a roll ahead of the postseason, and then some of the shifting that happens with the rotation helps things out even more. I don’t know. I’m also feeling a little shoulder-shruggy about the whole bullpen situation, because it lands in the same place it has landed ever since Ben Brown had his setback, since Edward Cabrera looked terrible, since Daniel Palencia looked lost, and on and on.
That place is: either the group that’s here figures it out, or else the starting pitchers, the defense, and the offense are going to have to OVER-carry the load in games where it’s really, really rare to not need an effective bullpen.
