Rome Odunze Injury Update: “Hopeful” for Week 1

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson met with the media on Tuesday and provided us with an update on wide receiver Rome Odunze’s status ahead of Week 1. Odunze left Thursday’s practice early with an apparent foot injury, prompting reasonable speculation about whether it was related to what he dealt with last season and how significant it was.

Fortunately, it seems neither related to what he dealt with last season nor significant. Johnson confirmed that Odunze did not aggravate the previous foot injury, that this is something different, and said so. At the same time, Odunze won’t practice today; Johnson hopes he’ll play on Sunday in Carolina.

Rome Odunze Injury Up “Hopeful” for Week 1

The good news is that what Odunze is dealing with right now isn’t related to the foot injury that cost him the entire month of December last season. “He’s more day-to-day right now, so I don’t believe he will be out there today, but we are hopeful he will be ready to go on Sunday,” Johnson said earlier today, calling the injury “something different.”

Hopeful is good. But hopeful probably means questionable on the official injury report, which will be released tomorrow afternoon, leaving Odunze’s availability for Sunday’s contest in Philadelphia up in the air for now. I would feel a lot better if we saw him on the practice field before they head to Charlotte, but we’ll see.

Odunze’s latest injury could be nothing significant, but it’s definitely frustrating. His 54-reception, 734-yard season in his rookie campaign was good, but left much to be desired in the consistency department. He opened last season looking like a man on a mission to prove he was the guy Chicago selected ninth overall in 2024, catching 20 passes for 296 yards and five touchdowns in Chicago’s first four games last season.

However, the lingering foot injury that eventually caused him to miss the final five games of the regular season in 2025 began shortly after that hot start, tanking a tremendous start. While dealing with the injury, Odunze would catch only 24 more passes for 365 yards and one touchdown the rest of the regular season.

The 2026 season should be a big campaign for Odunze. He’ll be eligible for an extension after this season, and he’s looking to put together a full season of consistency and health to put himself in a position to have those conversations and eventually land a second deal in Chicago. Opening the season with a foot injury is less than ideal for Odunze and the Bears offense.
