Enhanced Box Score: Marlins 10, Cubs 3 – September 6, 2026

Clay Holmes couldn’t muster another stellar start for the Cubs this afternoon, battling command issues and ultimately failing to help secure a series sweep in Miami.

A steady Marlins offense chipped away at Holmes, scoring two in the second, one in the fourth, and then five in the fifth, forcing his exit after 4.1 innings with eight earned runs, six hits, three walks, and a home run.

Four of Holmes’ six starts as a Cub have been good (or better), and despite today’s command issues, the start wasn’t the type that sapped me of my confidence in him moving forward. He’s still my Game 1 playoff starter.

While it was dissapointing not to get the sweep today, it wasn’t all bad. Pete Crow-Armstrong slugged his 40th home run of the season, 111.2mph to right in the top of the fifth inning, tying the game back up at three.

PCA’s 40th dinger made him the first Cub in franchise history to record a 40-home-run, 30-stolen-base season. And just the second left-handed hitter in Cubs’ history (Billy Williams, 1970) to hit 40 bombs in a season.

And because he’s the NL MVP, Pete also drove in the Cubs’ first run of the game with a SAC fly in the third, adding up to 96 RBI on the year. Once again, he is the Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game.

Colin Rea (initially) did okay mopping up Holmes’ mess, but more importantly saved the bullpen ahead of a three-game series in Milwaukee that begins tomorrow. After allowing one inherited run of Holmes’ to score in the fifth, Rea gave up a two-run homer to Javier Sanoja in the seventh inning, which put a final nail in the coffin.

Daniel Palencia got an inning of work in the eighth, and even though he struck out one (thanks to a Carson Kelly ABS challenge), and got an inning-ending double play to face the minimum, the eye test pretty clearly showed a reliever fighting mechanics and command issues.

Hopefully everyone can enjoy a day of leisure and a Cubs win against the Brewers on Labor Day tomorrow. Matthew Boyd (8-3, 4.05) vs. Robert Gasser (4-5, 4.57) at 1:10 p.m.
