The Joliet Police Department has placed two employees on leave following the alleged misuse of the city’s Flock Safety systems, officials said.
In a Facebook post on Friday, the department said an officer and a public safety dispatcher were placed on paid administrative leave after the discovery. The agency referred the matter to the City of Joliet Inspector General for investigation and the Illinois State Police, which will conduct an independent review.
As the investigation continues, Joliet police said it will limit additional comment “to protect the integrity of the investigative process.”
“The Joliet Police Department recognizes the seriousness of these allegations, and we continue to review and strengthen policies governing the use of this technology and will enact department-wide audits to reinforce appropriate use and accountability,” the department said in the post, in part. “These efforts reflect our continued commitment to responsible policing, transparency, and maintaining the trust of the community we serve.”
Flock cameras have faced growing scrutiny in recent months, mainly over privacy and tracking concerns.
The automated license plate reader system records not only plates, but the make, model, color, and even dents and bumper stickers of cars on public roads. The information is stored in a searchable database used by law enforcement and some private communities.
