ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — Roster cut-down day in the NFL this past Sunday saw the Bills shave their roster from 90 players to 53, with one Bills player who was a surprise addition to that 53. Keleki Latu, a second-year tight end, made the opening day roster against all odds.

“I didn’t feel like it was real to be honest. I feel like this was just a dream still,” Latu said.
Typically when a player gets cut, they’ll get a call from the general manager. Latu didn’t get that call, so instead he was the one picking up the phone.
“I just called my mom, called my girlfriend, she texted my brother immediately. I just said I made it,” Latu said. “And then, I was excited to see the guys coming back in the next day.”
As a rookie a year ago, Latu played in five games, compiling four catches for 45 yards. What made the Bills keep him as the fourth tight end was his added skill as a blocker.
“He’s a guy that Josh Allen and all of his offensive teammates trust,” said Brandon Beane, Bills general manager.
“He’s as easy to throw to as anybody on this team. You know, he’s got a very, very big catch radius,” Allen said.
Beane said the team usually goes with three tight ends. But this year was different.
“You’re trying to keep your best 53 players that you can. And we thought he earned that opportunity,” Beane said.
Latu knows nothing is guaranteed. He’s still buried on the depth chart but ready to make the most of this chance.
“I just put my foot in the door, and I just really got to make sure I belong here,” Latu said.
One position the Bills did not keep on their 53-man roster was at fullback. When asked if he could slide into that spot, Latu smiled and said, “We’ll see.”
