There’s nothing like a warm cookie right out of the oven, with lots of chocolate chips or sprinkles.
But cookies can also help build community and bring neighbors closer together.
Liz Tierney, who lives in Chicago’s Bucktown neighborhood, said she started baking when she was young.
“I had Martha Stewart cookbooks, and I would watch her show every Sunday morning,” Tierney said. “When I worked full-time, I baked cookies for my clients when I would see them at meetings and trade shows.”
After Tierney was laid off from her job, she spent a lot of time thinking about what she could do to make the world a better place.
She turned to cookies.
“There are so many negative things happening in the world right now that to bring joy, if it’s as small as a cookie is a really beautiful thing,” she said.
Liz decided to put her homemade cookies in one of the Little Free Libraries near her home.
She never realized the impact they would have on the community.
“I underestimated what it would do for me,” she said. “I’m meeting neighbors I didn’t know. I am connecting with people deeper than I have before. I take walks and say hi to people that I’ve never known before.”
Liz usually makes about 100 cookies a weekend.
“I do one drop on Saturday and Sunday at 11 a.m. I make two types of each, chocolate chip, and sprinkles. They are usually gone in five minutes.”
Sometimes, the response is overwhelming.
“On some weekends, there are lines down the street,” said neighbor Gary Sullivan. “It is very charming, nice influence on the community.”
“I think it is so special,” said neighbor Dalia Schreiber. “I think we have seen that it has brought the community together. We are so proud of Liz.”
“I choose to put something positive into the world, and I feel like the energy that flows back is tenfold,” Tierney said.
