OXNARD, Calif. (KEYT) World War II Navy Veteran and award-winning artist Don Fay celebrated his 99th birthday with a weekend art show and sale.
Art lovers bought their favorite paintings during the annual Art Walk at the Shores in Oxnard on Saturday.
Then, Fay's family kept the show and sale going on Sunday to continue his 99th birthday celebration.
He was born on August 27, 1927.
The artist and designer served as a Visual Information Officer for the Defense Department.
Some of his work is in corporate and private collections.
He also taught seminars in national parks including Yosemite.
Fay sold hundreds of paintings over the weekend and said giving them up is bittersweet.
"I am really delighted that all of my family, so much of my family came to help me with this exhibit that we are having and I have not just a thousand, " said Fay, "but it is closer to 2-thousand paintings, a lot of them sold yesterday and I was very pleased with that, but I am also a bit sad because one invests in these things and one dreams their way through them and then by God they must sell, eventually."
To his delight, his landscapes sell as well as his mysterious work.
"There is a side of me that loves mystery, I paint dragons, I paint question marks and I paint all of those things and I never thought they would sell and it is pretty obvious to me there are a lot of nuts around, just like me, and they buy these things by God it is amazing," said Fay.
His wife Linda "Fran" Fay said their is a secret to his longevity.
"He is always thinking up new ideas, " she said.
They are also musicians and used to perform together at the Tony's Steak & Sea Food in Ventura.
The 99 year old is also a poet who likes to write senryu poems similar to haikus.
His children, who helped with the sale, said he is also a great-grandfather.
The family hopes to celebrate his 100th birthday during the Art Walk at the Shores next year.
