What’s the view from your sofa?
I live in a two-bedroom house and the second bedroom has been converted into a micro-cinema. I bought a short-throw projector for less than what a good telly costs, and I love it. The room is painted burgundy, like all good cinemas.
What do you enjoy watching?
Mainly football; occasionally, I watch a TV series. I like Cobra Kai on Netflix, and I loved Jury Duty on Prime Video. I also enjoyed The Studio on Apple TV.
Who controls the remote?
I live alone, so me. Although sometimes my Sky box records a random show that I definitely didn’t choose. So I guess I share my remote with a ghost who has a thing for Homes under the Hammer.
What’s your first TV memory?
I remember being four, watching Are You Being Served? and the whole family laughing. Mr Humphries cracked me up. Can’t think why.
You’re in the new series of Taskmaster but you say you’ve never watched it before. Do you tend to avoid comedy series?
I mainly just watch football – weeks can go by when I watch nothing else. I like watching old documentaries on YouTube more than comedy, to be honest.
What’s your Taskmaster style?
I’m inept. If I get anything right, it’s by luck, not design – I was stumped most of the time. Greg Davies called me Grandad. Still, it was nice to get out of the house!
Are you a competitive person?
Yes. Which is why I don’t go near competitive TV shows, usually.
Were you familiar with your fellow contestants beforehand?
I’d met them all. I’d co-written with Chloe Petts on Fantasy Football League so I knew what a formidable comic force they are, and I’d done an episode of Travel Man with Richard Ayoade. I know Isy Suttie through her husband Elis James (my Fantasy Football League co-host), and I’m in awe of Nina Conti’s skills and invention.
Which comedian has had the biggest impact on you?
Vic and Bob. I owe them so much.
Who makes you laugh?
My late husband Kevin [McGee] was the funniest person I’ve ever met. Also, we had a chocolate labrador called Milo who was hilarious. He was so stubborn.
Is it easier to get into comedy now, with platforms like TikTok?
Most of the comedy I enjoy now is filmed in people’s living rooms and posted online. If you’ve got a mobile phone, you can be a star. I love Limmy, he’s a complete one-off. Also there’s a Canadian comedian called Mitch Wood on Instagram who makes me howl.
Your career has taken you from sketch comedy to Doctor Who, The Great British Bake Off, Hollywood films and the stage. What’s been most enjoyable?
Les Misérables, on stage – it’s an honour to be in it. I’m currently in my dressing room at Radio City Music Hall [in New York], where we’ve had a run of 22 shows. Last month, we were at the Royal Albert Hall; it doesn’t get better. Sixteen years after first playing Thénardier, I still find new things to do in the role. Theatre is eight shows a week, so you have a chance to improve.
What are you most proud of?
My musical novel The Boy Who Slept Through Christmas.
Is there anything you haven’t yet done but would love to do?
Not really, I’ve been incredibly lucky. But I would like to be in a Broadway show – I’ve been offered a couple but it didn’t work out dates-wise.
