A family on vacation in Chicago has found themselves in need of help after their mother contracted a bacterial infection and underwent multiple amputations.
Elorida Hermeneglido contracted Klebsiella, a type of bacteria normally found in human stool that can cause pneumonia, bloodstream infections, wound or surgical site infections and meningitis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“My feet and hands started turning black because the blood wasn’t circulating…” Hermeneglido told Telemundo Chicago in an interview, translated from Spanish.
Faced with this situation, her husband had to make a very difficult decision: permitting the amputation of his wife’s hands and feet.
“It’s awful because I know I’m going to need them, but they were already hurting me so much,” Hermeneglido said. “I couldn’t bear the pain.”
Telemundo Chicago talked to an infectious disease specialist, who explained more about the bacteria and its potential complications.
“When an infection is this severe—whether bacterial or not—blood pressure can drop significantly,” Dr. Alfredo Mena Lora, an infectious disease specialist, said. “This can put all the organs into a state of hypoperfusion, where not enough oxygen reaches them, and it can affect the extremities.”
Hermeneglido’s family has started an online fundraiser, hoping to raise money to get prosthetics so she can return home to Mexico.
