Kit Harington has been confirmed to star in the second season of the Harry Potter TV series.
The Game of Thrones star has been cast as the deceptive Gilderoy Lockhart, taking over a role that had originally gone to Nicholas Hoult.
Deadline first reported the news, which revealed that Hoult had exited the series over scheduling conflicts.
HBO reportedly faced issues with two pre-existing Hoult projects, and when the Lockhart scenes shifted within season 2's production schedule, the Superman actor was forced to leave the show.
The network is described as having then approached Harington, who has recently found further acclaim in their BBC co-production Industry.
Radio Times has reached out to representatives of HBO, Nicholas Hoult, and Kit Harington for additional comment.
Harington is also no stranger to the character, having voiced Lockhart in Harry Potter: The Full-Cast Audio Editions, which was released through Audible late last year.
Lockhart is a central figure in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, the second of Rowling's novels, which acts as the basis for season 2.
A celebrity wizard famed for his adventures, Lockhart is recruited by Dumbledore as Professor of Defence Against the Dark Arts, but he is not all he appears to be.
Sir Kenneth Branagh memorably played the role in the 2002 film, which adapted the same novel.
Season 2 was greenlit in May, before a single episode of the series had aired, and is scheduled to begin filming later this year.
Season 1, titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, premieres at Christmas, airing on HBO in the US and streaming on HBO Max globally from 25 December 2026.
The series comes after Harry Potter author JK Rowling has faced backlash in some quarters due to her views on transgender rights.
In 2020, she published a lengthy statement detailing her stance on sex and gender debates – the essay was criticised and disputed by LGBTQ+ charities including Stonewall.
Rowling has also shared her views on social media, including in a 2024 post on X (formerly Twitter), in which she insisted that "there are no trans kids" and opposed the idea that a child can be "born in the wrong body".

In May 2025, Rowling set up the JK Rowling Women's Fund, which describes itself as offering legal funding support to "individuals and organisations fighting to retain women’s sex-based rights".
Harry Potter actors including Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, have distanced themselves from Rowling's views and have issued statements supporting the transgender community.
Others, including Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter and Jim Broadbent, have defended the author from the criticism she has received.
Harry Potter will be available to watch on HBO Max from 25 December 2026.
