Students demand accountability after reported sexual assault at University of Chicago fraternity

The University of Chicago and a fraternity said they were cooperating with police as authorities investigated a reported sexual assault during a house party.

Following the weekend incident, NBC Chicago’s JC Navarette spoke to students and a fraternity member from another house, who all condemned the allegations. Students also raised concerns about women’s safety in a place where they should feel safe and supported.

“To hear that a woman came here just trying to have some fun and was sexually assaulted is very, very upsetting,” University of Chicago student Alexa Walsh.

A 21-year-old woman reported being sexually assaulted just feet away from the campus at a fraternity house early Sunday morning. In an email to students, campus officials said the victim isn’t affiliated with the university but was attending a party at the house.

Officials said someone intervened, and the suspect ran from the scene. The victim was subsequently taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center for treatment.

Campus police said surveillance video showed someone matching the suspect’s description leaving the house, though no suspect had been publicly identified as of Monday night.

A member of another fraternity said Greek organizations needed to do more to ensure their parties are safe.

“By opening this party, and not having the proper security measures in place for this to, you know, happen, you are at fault for letting such a thing happen at your fraternity,” Angel, a University of Chicago student, said.

The house is associated with Alpha Epsilon Pi, whose national organization has said it is cooperating with the investigation, writing, in part, “Pending the results of that investigation, the chapter has been told to not hold any events or programs…Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity unconditionally opposes, and its conditions of membership absolutely prohibit, any conduct considered as ‘sexual harassment’ or ‘sexual assault.'”

Investigators have not said whether the suspect has any connection to the fraternity or the university. Students told NBC Chicago they would like to see real accountability and a culture change across college campuses.

“I’m just hoping the University, University Police, the fraternity themselves their national organization actually takes this seriously and I hope that the young woman can heal from this and she has that support system,” Walsh said.

Police are asking anyone with information on the incident to come forward.
