Longtime ‘SNL’ Cast Member Reveals Surprisingly Emotional Reason He Came Close to Crying During Segment with Late Actor Chadwick Boseman: ‘It Was Like My Childhood’

This past weekend, some of the foremost stars of Saturday Night Live traveled to nearby New York Comic Con to celebrate all things television at the renowned fan convention.

During the course of a special panel featuring several cast and crew members from NBC’s hit sketch comedy series, longtime cast member Kenan Thompson reflected on a surprisingly emotional moment when asked about his favorite on-set costume.

Answering the question from the stage during the NBC 100: Behind the Scenes of SNL Panel, the 48-year-old comedian revealed that his personal favorite costume he had yet to wear on the show had been none other than Panthro, the beloved cartoon character from Thundercats.

“My ultimate favorite … it was Panthro,” Thompson said in the panel, which also included fellow cast member Sarah Sherman, makeup department head Louie Zakarian and the makeup department’s Jason Milani (according to People magazine). “And they made me look identical to Panthro … it was when Chadwick [Boseman] was hosting, and Panthro comes out in his monologue claiming to be the original Black Panther.”

In the context of his appearance on SNL, Thompson did indeed appear decked out as Panthro during Chadwick Boseman’s opening monologue back in 2018, roughly two years before the Marvel actor’s untimely death from colon cancer in 2020.

Interrupting” Boseman’s opening monologue, Thompson’s Panthro played off Boseman’s famed tenure as the MCU’s Black Panther, a character that the actor famously portrayed up to his tragic death.

At the time, Thompson said he was specifically overcome with emotion due to the special place the character held in his childhood, coupled with Boseman’s own skyrocketing popularity in mainstream pop culture.

“I didn’t want to look in the mirror until it was done, and when I left, I almost cried because it was like my childhood, like, coming to life, and I get to do it in such an amazing like moment,” Thompson said of the Panthro costume. “Also, like, for the culture as well because, like, Chadwick was having such a major, major movement at the time.”
