It’s not completely out of the realm of possibility. Yesterday, the Sports Business Journal published an article by Tom Friend titled, “Analysis: The NBA’s ‘For Sale’ Signs a Curious Trend.“ In that article, Friend spoke to a former NBA team governor, whose name was not mentioned, about the big money being thrown around — and the Bulls were mentioned.“I mean, look, if somebody gives you a great price,” said the former governor. “If somebody offered the Bulls $10 billion, would [Jerry Reinsdorf] be a seller? Why not? But I just don’t know. Most people who buy these teams aren’t selling them. [Heat owner] Micky [Arison] is not getting out. But if you gave Micky $10 billion, would he do it? I have no idea. But he’s not doing it around $6 or 7.”
The Lakers recently sold at a valuation of $12 billion. The Bulls, with their legacy, marketability, and place in one of the biggest sports markets in the country, could easily command a valuation around $10 billion if they were ever put up for sale. And that kind of money may be the only thing that gets the Reinsdorfs to sell their majority stake in the Windy City. In other news, the Chicago Bulls just wrapped up their two-day Bulls Fest. From the media that came out of those two days, the weekend did seem like a great one to remind the city why there is plenty to be excited about heading into the upcoming season. It also gave us a chance to hear some former club heroes talk about their time in Chicago and reminisce about when the Bulls were a perennial playoff team. Nate Robinson, in a conversation with CHGO, shared a great memory of Joakim Noah. The scene is set in the locker room after the Bulls had just won a game. Former Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau came in, being a “negative Nancy,” harping on everything they did wrong rather than celebrating the win. That’s when Noah stepped in.“We could make nothing, I don’t know how we won the game,” said Nate. “Joakim is all about positive energy… Coach Thibs was being a negative Nancy in the locker room… Joakim was like, ‘F that, man, we won!’ Bring it in.”
