2026 JAPANESE SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Saturday, October 10th – Monday, October 12th Saga Prefecture SCM (25m) Qualifying Competition for SC World Championships SwimSwam Preview Entries Live Results Day 1 Recap/Day 2 RecapThe 2026 Japanese Short Course Championships concluded tonight with a national and Asian continental record going down in the final of the men’s 100m butterfly.
23-year-old Tomonobu Gomi fired off a monster lifetime best of 48.58 to dip under the 49-second threshold for the first time in his career.
Gomi split 22.54/26.04 to get the job done, keeping Asian Games champion Shoon Mitsunaga at bay.
19-year-old Mitsunaga settled for silver but still scored a new University record of 49.09. Takaya Yasue rounded out the podium in 49.60.
The former Japanese benchmark stood at the 49.54 first registered by Takeshi Kawamoto in 2020, then matched by Gomi at last year’s edition of this competition.
The previous Asian Record rested at the 49.25 China’s Li Zhuhao established in 2018, meaning Gomi is the first-ever Asian swimmer to clear the 49-second barrier.
Gomi is now the 9th-fastest swimmer in history in the SCM 100 butterfly event.
