ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The University of Rochester’s Department of Surgery celebrated the graduation of its 2026 Next Gen of Surgery class on Friday.

The program is made up of 17 local high school students, all interested in going into the medical field. News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic was there as students showcased what they learned during their six-week internship.

UR Medicine chose these students from 60 applicants, ages 16 to 18. They spent the summer working with physicians, surgeons and researchers.

    Local Student Impact

For Akasha Manning, it was about building connections and exploring more in a field she already knew she wanted to go into.

“Since I’m a high school student I couldn’t be too hands on, but we did a lot of workshops, learned how to do stitches, got CPR certified, Narcan training and stop the bleed which was my favorite,” Manning said. “Went into Mercy Flight.”

Not only does it give students some hands on experience, but they are treated as any other employee and put on the payroll for a paid summer internship. It all started when the vice chair of community engagement in the Department of Surgery met with leaders from Encompass, an afterschool program.

This is a long term commitment.

    What Happens After the Program?

“All the students are offered entry-level positions at the medical center. Usually we have about 60%,” said Dr. Paula Cupertino, vice chair of community engagement and health outcomes at URMC’s Department of Surgery. “And many of the students continue with us, and they have been hired for three years and continue to get promoted and moving up the ladder. So imagine if their goal is to get to medical school in eight years, they are already in the pathway.”

Program leaders said they are continuing to expand to keep getting students into these programs. This program started four years ago with just eight students, then it went up to 12 and now it’s at 17.

According to UR Rochester’s website on the internship, some need-to-know facts include:

Since this is an internship program, participants will be treated as formal URMC employees and will be expected to behave as such. Professionalism, punctuality, accountability, and excellence are all requirements to remain in good standing The hours of the program are from Monday through Friday from 8 am until 4 pm, an hour will be provided for lunch. The program will run for six weeks in July and August of each year.
