Bike Doc community program in Sacramento offers free bicycle repairs

Heading back to school usually means spending money on supplies and more students walking or biking on the road.

Cue the Bike Doc, a free community program in Sacramento that aims to help save money on costs, including the price of fixing a bike.

The program, which is funded by the community walking and biking safety group JIBE, claims it can make a bike as good as new.

The Bike Doc repair clinics come to places like the North Natomas Farmer's Market and other community events in Sacramento County. The mobile clinic can resemble a busy emergency room, but the triage area is for bicycles.

Bike Doc mechanics volunteer or are paid by a partner agency called Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates, or SABA.

One mechanic, Emmie Li, trained in Inderkum High School's bike tech program.

"We do what a doctor would for a patient but for a bike," Li said.

Sometimes that means a consultation with a colleague, a fellow Bike Doc mechanic.

The intake, diagnosis and repair are all free and save an average of $70 to $150 per bike, depending on the types of repairs needed — from replacing a tire to a full brake check.

These mechanics have seen everything, most commonly flat tires and squeaky brakes.

"My son's bike brakes were loose and my daughter's bike was not working, so we thought we'd try this versus buying a new bike," parent Harijani Gupta told CBS News Sacramento.

After the repairs, the docs take the bike for a final spin before giving it a clean bill of health.

"It's cool to see the joy on their faces shine, getting to take the bikes home," Li said.

These mechanics stay busy, so making an appointment is encouraged. Most repairs take under an hour, and you can even drop a bicycle off.

JIBE also offers bicycle safety classes.
