A large brawl broke out in the stands between Cubs and White Sox fans Monday at Wrigley Field during the start of the Crosstown Classic.
The fight broke out in the eighth inning of the game, with fans from both teams appearing to throw fists during the heated moment, images showed.
Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong, who made history with his performance in the game, addressed the moment during his post-game remarks.
“The fights in the stands are unfortunate and somewhat nauseating, but, I mean, that’s … you got people in the stands competing, too, and, I just think aside from that, like, all jokes aside too, it’s really good for the city having both of us playing the kind of baseball we are and putting games out there like we did tonight,” he said.
The Cubs told the Chicago Tribune in a statement that fan safety is a “top priority.”
“We work closely with our public safety partners to respond to incidents at the ballpark and appreciate their partnership in addressing the situation last night,” a spokesperson told the publication.
The moment is far from the first fight to break out between Cubs and Sox fans during the Crosstown Classic.
According to Cubs’ Code of Conduct at Wrigley Field, “fighting, taunting or making threatening gestures or remarks” are prohibited.
“Any guest who does not [follow the Code of Conduct] may be subject to removal from Wrigley Field without refund and revocation of season tickets and/or future ticket privileges and may also be in violation of city or state rules, regulations or ordinances, resulting in possible arrest and prosecution,” the team’s website states. “The Cubs and Wrigley Field reserve the right to determine what unruly or unacceptable behavior is and to take any and all actions permitted by applicable law.”
The Cubs went on to win a 7-5 victory over the Sox Monday night at Wrigley Field. It was not immediately clear what happened to the fans involved in the fight.
They’ll look to continue their home winning streak over the Sox Tuesday night when the teams square off again at Wrigley Field. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. CT, and the game will air on Marquee Sports Network and CHSN locally, along with TBS nationally.
