While many viewers have flocked to BBC Two over the years to tune into Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse's Gone Fishing, there's one star who always stole the show – Ted the dog.
Ted became a beloved fixture of the series and a national treasure in his own right. He sadly passed away in April 2026, but fans now have the chance to join Ted on one last adventure.
Happy Ever After: My Final Journey with Gone Fishing will be published on Thursday 24 September to coincide with the release of season 9 of Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing, where Ted will also make his final appearance in the opening episode.
In Happy Ever After, Ted faces the prospect of retirement as his days on the riverbank draw to a close.
The synopsis continues: "Naturally, he has no intention of fading quietly into the background. Instead, he sets out to discover what his next chapter might hold, trying his paw at possible roles in public service, the military and the voluntary sector – with varying degrees of success – and making one final, rather startling discovery about his precious briefcase..."
Ted was owned by Gone Fishing executive producer Lisa Clark after she rescued him from a dog's home in Surrey in 2013. She is also the author of the book.
Clark previously said: "Ted was a much-loved family pet as well as a treasured companion to Paul and Bob on Gone Fishing. He took fame in his little stride and loved nothing better than messing around on the riverbanks, nicking jammy dodgers from Bob and bait from Paul.
"He will be sorely missed both at home and on screen. We’ll never forget him. He is survived at home by Bo the Briard."
Mortimer also paid tribute to Ted, saying at the time: "So very, very sad. Lovely Ted, the best companion and the greatest little chum. Going to miss him so much... and away boss."
Whitehouse added: "Bye bye Ted old friend. He wasn’t a dog, he was a species all of his own. He’s gone to the great briefcase emporium in the sky. We will really miss you mate."
