John had recently skipped Old-Timer’s Day at Yankee Stadium due to health concerns, and his agent published a press release this weekend announcing that he had died at his Florida home.
Born in Terre Haute, John attended Indiana State University and made his first big splash in the Major Leagues when he joined the Chicago White Sox in the 1960s.
In all he pitched seven seasons with the White Sox, making the 1968 American League All-Star roster and posting an 82-80 record and a 2.95 ERA in seven seasons with the South Siders.
While John’s career statistics were remarkable enough, with 288 wins and a 3.34 ERA in parts of 26 seasons, it was his famed elbow reconstruction surgery in 1974 that forever cemented his name in the minds of baseball fans. Dodgers team physician Dr. Frank Jobe performed a ligament replacement surgery on John’s pitching elbow, and he became the first MLB player to ever recover from and pitch after the procedure.
He ended up pitching for 13 more seasons after undergoing the surgery, finally retiring in 1989.
After his playing career ended John was a fixture at Yankees games, and was an MLB broadcaster and activist in the later stages of his life.
Earlier this summer, John announced in a statement he would be unable to participate in Old-Timers’ Day festivities at Yankee Stadium, revealing he was dealing with health issues.
His agent and Major League Baseball confirmed his passing on Saturday at the age of 83.
