McIntosh Acknowledges 400 Free ‘A’ Final Miss, Will Swim Tonight’s ‘B’ Final ...Middle East

Having missed the 400 free ‘A’ final at the Pan Pacific Championships today, placing 9th in this morning’s heats, McIntosh announced via Instagram that she had misjudged the heats but would be swimming the ‘B’ final in tonight’s finals session.

McIntosh placed third in the final heat this morning, three seconds behind Lani Pallister, and was outsplit by a second on the final 50 by 8th-place qualifer Fan Yaqi of China, who turns 15 years old this year.

McIntosh is the fastest swimmer in the world so far this year by nearly four seconds, posting the second-fastest performance in history at the U.S Open in December with a 3:55.37.

Her world record, which she swam at last summer’s Canadian Trials, stands at 3:54.18 and is over a second faster than any other swimmer in history.

She would have likely been the favorite in tonight’s ‘A’ final had she qualified, although Australian Lani Pallister did beat her in the 200 free, 1:53.67 to 1:53.86, on the first day of the meet.

We Will see McIntosh swimming in clear water tonight, with only two other swimmers in the ‘B’ final under 4:10 this morning. McIntosh won the World Championship title last year in a time of 3:56.26, two seconds ahead of Li Bingjie (3:58.21) and Katie Ledecky (3:58.49).

Ledecky and Pallister will be the favorites in tonight’s ‘A’ final, but it could be that the fastest swim of the night comes in the ‘B’ final. This meet has not been at the same level as her previous World Championships and Olympic games so far for McIntosh, with one gold and one silver from three individual events, but she will have another chance at gold in the 200 IM tomorrow and a shot at a redemption swim in the 400 free tonight.
