Human remains discovered in the Palomar Mountain area are not believed to be connected to the disappearance of a 44-year-old Oceanside woman who has been missing since July, but police said Thursday the investigation remains active.
A statement was released Thursday acknowledging the discovery but clarified the remains were currently not tied to the ongoing missing person case involving Angelica Brophy, according to the Oceanside Police Department.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office was leading the investigation into the discovery of the remains. Any further information regarding the identity of those remains or the surrounding investigation will be released by the sheriff’s office.
Brophy was last seen on the afternoon of July 6 at Harrah’s Resort in Valley Center and was reported missing that night. Days later, the investigation shifted to the rugged eastern San Diego County highlands after authorities found her unoccupied vehicle in a state park parking lot.
Early attempts to track her cell phone were unsuccessful because the device was either turned off or had a dead battery, according to the OPD.
The sheriff’s office Search and Rescue Team led the operations, which included a state parks dive team searching a local pond, as well as personnel from the U.S. Border Patrol and the OPD. Canine units from the San Diego Police Department, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service also assisted.
Despite pursuing newly developed leads that prompted three additional targeted searches in the park, crews were unable to locate Brophy.
