That probably got a little more unnerving in the 8th and 9th than you’d prefer to see with your (current) top-two relievers on the mound in a four-run game (kudos to Jacob Webb for really closing this one out), but I’m not going to turn my nose up on any kind of win, especially one where the Cubs went down early and then turned on the offense.
Similarly, I’m not gonna beat up on Shota Imanaga for a tough one. He’d been on such a roll for so long that he was bound to have one of those nights where the long ball got him. We know it’s a risk baked into his approach, and tonight he missed a few spots and got punished for it.
But the bats where there to pick Shota up, with five of the team’s nine hits going for extra bases (which is what you need when the RISP hits aren’t coming). Alex Bregman had a particularly productive night, participating in half of the runs. He’s the Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game for this one.
Hard not to notice, by the way, how dramatically different this lineup performs when Bregman, Ian Happ, and Nico Hoerner are getting on base back-to-back-to-back.
