At least it wasn’t some heartbreaking moment that ended the Cubs’ season. Just an ugly couple games with almost nothing redeeming to which to point that even could have had a shot at producing a win. That series was over from the words, ‘Play ball.’
In such an instance, any pain gives way quite quickly to frustration and disappointment and finger pointing and overreacting and fear. Those are all instinctive places to go, and I have no doubt I’ll be there soon enough. Mistakes were made, as they say.

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) October 1, 2026 Back to the just-concluded Wild Card Series. Just two Cubs had multiple hits in the series – Nico Hoerner and Seiya Suzuki – and just four players total had even one. The team had just ONE extra-base hit in the two games, a Hoerner double. Pete Crow-Armstrong and Alex Bregman were hitless and struck out in half their plate appearances. The team as a whole hit .129/.229/.145/17 wRC+ across 70 plate appearances. The Padres’ pitchers deserve a great deal of credit on that front, but it’s also true that a team whose success or failure has been predicated on its offense can’t have a two-game stretch like that unless they want to lose both games. Two ways to frame the Cubs’ historic failure in these two games. First, the charitable framing:The @Padres are the first team in MLB history to hold the highest-scoring team in the majors during the regular season to just one run (or none) in a multi-game postseason series. pic.twitter.com/GJwrV69aAf
— OptaSTATS (@OptaSTATS) October 1, 2026 Second, the less charitable:Lowest slugging percentage in a multi-game postseason series, MLB history:.145 – 2026 Cubs (NLWC).153 – 2020 Twins (ALWC).154 – 2022 Rays (ALWC).174 – 1998 Rangers (ALDS).179 – 2019 Cardinals (NLCS)
— OptaSTATS (@OptaSTATS) October 1, 2026 Homers are good, but you do have to OCCASIONALLY be able to win without them:From @ESPNInsights: FWIW, The Cubs haven't won a game when they don't homer since July 30th at the Cardinals (won 4-2). They’ve lost 14 in a row when they don’t hit a home run, longest streak in MLB and longest for them since 2010.
— Jesse Rogers (@JesseRogersESPN) October 1, 2026 You have to be careful with a stat like that, because it can be read to imply hitting home runs is not actually the best thing a hitter can do. And it can be read to ignore the fact that ALL teams hitting home runs win their games at a dramatically higher clip than when they don’t homer. But it is inarguable that if your offense is TOO reliant on homers, it can lead to severe underperformance when the homers don’t come. (Again, though: the Cubs had the second highest OBP in baseball this year and the sixth highest batting average. It would be totally ignoring reality to say that they exclusively produced offense via the home run.) I can’t really imagine this was intentional, even as I get why the Padres would be miffed:Padres were pissed after Jake Cronenworth got hit with a 100 MPH fastball t.co/j0miihR8q9 pic.twitter.com/6B0XiyfD4z
— Talkin' Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) October 1, 2026 Also: it really sucks that Jim Deshaies postponed his hip surgery just to be able to provide color for … two of the worst Cubs games all year. It also sucks that the Cubs traded a bunch of prospects for two playoff games. The Red Sox are also Going Through It right now after getting bounced with ease by the Yankees. There is, for example, a lot of rage that Sonny Gray was pulled after 4.2 innings:Some pretty pointed comments from Sonny Gray about when he was pulled. Very emotional.Made a point to highlight how good he's been the 3rd time through the order. pic.twitter.com/xHTVId2iFJ
— Tyler Milliken (@tylermilliken_) October 1, 2026Did not expect a complete mutiny in the #RedSox clubhouse after the loss but that's exactly what happened. Wow.
— John Zannis (@John_Zannis) October 1, 2026Willson Contreras: "It's not enough when you have talent, or you have data, or you have computers telling you what to do, because this is baseball. The data is here to help us, but at the end of the day, you need experience and veteran guys to win games. There's a lot of stuff I… pic.twitter.com/MS7u5yy96y
