Illinois State Police troopers were investigating after a crash involving a car and a school bus left one person dead.
The crash was reported around 8:38 a.m. along Illinois Route 9 at Ford County Road 1000 East near Gibson City, which is roughly 30 miles north of Champaign. State police said a car traveling on 1000 East failed to yield and entered Illinois Route 9 in front of the school bus, causing the bus to strike the vehicle.
One person in the car died from their injuries. Three others inside the vehicle were injured, but their conditions weren’t immediately available.
The bus from the Hoopeston Area School District was transporting 20 students on the Hoopeston Middle School softball team. All students on the bus were taken to nearby hospitals, but initial reports did not indicate whether there were any serious injuries.
Traffic was expected to remain closed until further notice, and drivers were advised to take an alternate route.
