Madonna was back on the VMAs stage for the first time in 23 years, and the reaction to her appearance was about more than just her performance.
On Monday, September 28’s, episode of The View, the cohosts discussed the different expectations women face as they get older, especially when they are in the public eye.
Madonna, 68, kicked off Sunday night’s 2026 VMAs with Sabrina Carpenter, performing “Bring Your Love” before joining Charli xcx for “Danceteria Afterhours.” Julia Garner, Sombr, Seth Rogen and Debi Mazar also joined her during the set.
She was also the night’s most-nominated artist and took home seven awards, making it her biggest night at the VMAs.

“So Madonna’s being criticized for being too overtly s***** and trying to look too young,” Griffin said. “And then Jasmine’s being criticized for trying to age gracefully. It’s like, you can’t win no matter what direction you take it.”
The conversation then turned to how women are often expected to look a certain way as they age while also being encouraged to embrace the natural changes.
“I think that’s what’s so sad about all of this that’s going on about women and aging is, like, what is the alternative?” cohost Sunny Hostin said. “It is such a blessing to be able to age.”
Hostin returned to the issue of women being judged by their appearance as they age, arguing that the focus should instead be on the fact that they are still here and living their lives.
“I’m going to be 58 this year,” she noted. “I can’t begin to tell you how many emails I get almost on a monthly basis about someone being widowed in my age group, someone having a stroke, someone having a heart attack.
“How dare you shame someone for trying to age well and just live?” Hostin added.
