Hosted by Snoop Dogg and broadcast live from Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater, the 2026 VMAs ceremony was dominated by awards to Madonna and Taylor Swift. The awards show posted its largest viewership in key adults 25-54, adults 18-49 and adults 18-34 demos in years, with all audience demos up more than +30% from last year. The telecast peaked with over 15 million viewers across CBS and MTV in the opening act, which featured Madonna’s first VMAs performance in 23 years, including a show-opening medley with Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX.
The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards telecast was scheduled to run from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. PT, though the on-air broadcast experienced a delay of about 20 to 22 minutes on CBS due to an NFL game running late.
The ratings seem to vindicate the key creative decisions around the show – a tight, streamlined format (it was about half the length of the Grammys and the Oscars); and a focus on household names, and legacy acts in several cases, over the latest and hottest attractions. Nirvana, a band that disbanded in 1994, received the video vanguard award. George Michael, who died in 2016, was honored with an extensive hits medley. There was also a simple tribute to Dolly Parton, who died last month, as there has been and likely will be on many more awards shows.
Madonna and Swift were both on hand to receive awards. Madonna opened the show with a lively, star-studded performance, but Swift didn’t perform, opting to introduce her new video instead. The show aired a clip of Bruno Mars performing in a recent concert. Two of the night’s other biggest winners, BTS and Ariana Grande, had no role in the show.
