Hours after news broke that Ariana Grande would be taking a break from the public eye, she took the stage in Chicago to address her fans.
Videos shared on social media showed Grande taking a moment to discuss the news onstage at the United Center Monday night, the first of three performances in Chicago this week for her “Eternal Sunshine Tour.”
“Sometimes when a story comes out that’s not directly from me things can get a little blown out of proportion so I wanted to speak to my fans directly tonight,” she began, adding that she would “like to just clear the air.”
“So basically the announcement that was made yesterday was not a reactive or impulsive thing. it is something that I had decided to plan, that I had quietly made a long time ago and it was made from a thoughtful and empowered place,” she said.
Grande went on to address concerns she’d heard from fans who were “worried that negativity was ruining things for me.”
“I just have to say that could not be more the f–k opposite,” she said. “Honestly, this is not what that is. And I just want to be very, very clear: Multiple things can be true at the same time. Yes, boundaries, they need to be set. Human beings can need a break sometimes. And also, this can be and will continue to be the greatest experience of my professional and creative life.”
A representative for Grande had earlier told People magazine that the 33-year-old singer “will be taking a step back from visibility after she completes the Eternal Sunshine Tour.”
“She looks forward to finishing the tour and ending it on a high note, both healthily and happily, and then taking a much-deserved break from public-facing work and appearances, which has led to endless, ongoing public scrutiny,” her rep said.
Grande’s decision means she will pull out of an upcoming stage musical in London, producers said. She had been due to star alongside her “Wicked” co-star Jonathan Bailey in a production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park with George” at the Barbican theater in 2027.
Empire Street Productions said Sunday that Grande will no longer be part of the production.
“We know this cannot have been an easy decision, and she makes it with our complete understanding and support,” the company said. It said the production will open next summer as planned, with casting announced “in due course.”
Grande is slated to perform again Wednesday and Thursday at Chicago’s United Center as part of the tour, the last performance in the U.S. before she wraps up in London on Sept. 1.
Grande found fame as a child performer on Nickelodeon before releasing her debut album, “Yours Truly,” in 2013. She has won three Grammy Awards and was nominated for a supporting actress Academy Award for the big-screen adaptation of the musical “Wicked.”
