Born in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1979, Momoa (whose full name is Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa) was raised by his mother in Norwalk, Iowa, following his parents' divorce. After graduating from Norwalk High School, the then-would-be actor moved back to Hawaii, where he started a modeling career.
Supposedly, in 1999, the hunky Hawaiian heartthrob was named Model of the Year. As it turns out, this was a fictitious title that Momoa made up to score points with a casting director. But that’s not all. He also manufactured an imaginary modeling experience working for some of the leading luxury brands just to get his foot in the door. That said, his bluff seemed to work, and he landed the role of Jason Ioane on Baywatch: Hawaii.
The actor shared his audition story with Today’sWillie Geist, explaining the origin of his now-famous fib: “You have to have a resume. I’m like, ‘What am I gonna tell them?’ I don’t have anything. I’m like, ‘I worked on Colorado Trail Crew.’ Like there’s nothing I can put on my resume. So I was like, ‘Yeah, I’ve done Louis Vuitton. I did some Gucci.’ “
He added, “My girlfriend at the time was with, she was like a pageant thing. And I took some photos and did a little pageant thing for them, and I’m like, ‘Yeah, I was in it, handed out the crowns.”
Not one to play it coy, Momoa continued, “And it worked. I just have no fear.”

That’s the one person that stood out in the Twitter feedback.”
Even though he didn’t win People’s title, Momoa was named GQ Australia’s ‘Man of the Year’ in 2019.
Of course, his breakthrough Baywatch: Hawaii role was just the first in a long series of credits. Things have changed since his early years in Hawaii. Momoa no longer has to make up faux awards just to score parts. Over his career, the 47-year-old has starred in major movie blockbusters such as Aquaman, Fast X, Supergirl, Dune, The Wrecking Crew, The Flash, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Along with feature films, Momoa has also made his mark on the small screen, starring in Game of Thrones as well as Apple TV’s See and Chief of War (which he also co-created, co-wrote, and executive produced).
