For years, singer Debbie Gibson wrote her own material with the hopes of securing a record deal. When her demo tape containing the song "Only in My Dreams" was heard by an executive at Atlantic Records, she secured a development deal. From 1986 to 1987 while she was just 16 years old, Gibson played in clubs and worked on writing a more robust music catalog for what would become her debut album, Out of the Blue.
Out of the Blue was written and recorded by Gibson in just four weeks. Gibson was the sole songwriter for all ten tracks on the album. While creating the album art with her iconic ripped jeans, Gibson was told by the photographer that her bare knee was too distracting. Her response was to draw a smiley face on her exposed knee for the cover shot, which ended up being a trend among her fans.
Out of the Blue produced the hit singles "Only in my Dreams," "Shake Your Love," "Out of the Blue," "Foolish Beat," and "Staying Together."
Four of the singles from Gibson's debut album made the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, with "Foolish Beat" securing the top spot. At 16, this made Gibson the youngest artist to write, produce and perform a Billboard number-one single, securing a Guiness World Record. She is still the youngest female artist to do so.
Out of the Blue was an international hit album charting in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Asia. By the end of 1988, the album had gone triple platnium and has since sold over five million copies worldwide.
On top of being a massive commerical success, Out of the Blue was heavily praised by music critics. Billboardwrote of the album that Gibson, the "sixteen- year-old singer's low profile is not commensurate with her talent or success. 'Only in my Dreams' is a top 15 hit; title track should follow up handily. Both – along with rest of the album's material – were written by Gibson, portending much in the way of staying power."
From recording in basements to headline sold out arenas, Out of the Blue put Gibson on the map and solidified her status as an '80s star. A truly impressive feat of course, but especially at such a young age.
