Kimi Antonelli’s sensational 2026 F1 season has been hit with an unexpected off-track complication, with the young Italian’s former manager, Giovanni Minardi, taking his former protégé to court over alleged unpaid compensation.
The case, which has reportedly been developing behind the scenes for almost a year, has now reached the Bologna civil court, with Minardi seeking financial recognition for his role in shaping the early stages of Antonelli’s career.
Antonelli, currently leading the F1 world championship standings, was brought under the Minardi Management umbrella in 2014 when he was just a young karting prospect.
The son of former F1 team owner Giancarlo Minardi played a role in arranging opportunities for the young prodigy, including a test aimed at gaining entry into the Ferrari junior programme.
However, after Ferrari rejected Antonelli at the time due to his age, the youngster eventually joined Mercedes’ junior ranks in 2018. His relationship with Minardi subsequently ended, with Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff taking over his management.
A dispute over years of investment
According to Minardi’s legal representative, the dispute centres on compensation allegedly owed for the work carried out during Antonelli’s formative years, as well as claims linked to the termination of the management agreement.
Speaking to Italian news agency Adnkronos, Minardi’s lawyer, Mattia Grassani, explained why his client decided to pursue the matter through the courts.
“Giovanni Minardi suffered enormously over what happened and turned to ordinary justice because it was the only option left. So many years of work, sacrifice, and investment in the young driver deserved far greater recognition. The ordinary justice route was the only option,” he said.
Grassani insists the case is far from straightforward and involves several parties connected to Antonelli’s early career.
“This is a very complex case that has been pending for almost a year, and has already seen numerous hearings. It pits Giovanni Minardi and Kimi Antonelli against their parents, alleging breach of the management contract awarded to the minor Kimi and his parents several years ago.
“When the driver moved to Mercedes, the Antonelli team deemed the conditions no longer met to continue. This is where the dispute arose.
“There were opportunities to settle the matter out of court, but the offers made were deemed unacceptable by the former manager, who expressed his full availability. Unfortunately, no compromise was reached.”
Success always attracts attention
Antonelli’s rapid ascent from teenage prodigy to Mercedes Formula 1 race winner and championship contender has made him one of the sport’s biggest emerging stars – and, inevitably, a figure attracting significant attention.
Success often brings with it those who believe they played a crucial role in the journey and seek recognition, financial or otherwise, for their contribution. But while the spotlight around Antonelli has intensified, it will ultimately be the court that determines whether Minardi’s claims stand up and whether any compensation is owed.
For Antonelli, whose focus has been on fighting for the Formula 1 title, the legal battle could become an unwanted distraction at a pivotal moment of his young career.
