Jameson Taillon may not have a spot in the Cubs’ starting rotation after today.
A bad 2026 season for Taillon got worse this afternoon as the Pirates belted two home runs and a grand slam in the first three innings for a 7-1 lead.
The Cubs offense mustered an inspiring response, though, scoring three the next half-inning courtesy Carson Kelly, Pedro Ramirez, and PCA, tacking on another run in the 8th, and drawing within one in their last at-bat when Seiya Suzuki mashed a two-run homer to left.
Unfortunately it became a close, but no cigar, failed comeback as Michael Busch grounded out and Ian Happ struck out (batting righty) to end the game.
PCA’s RBI hit was a triple off the Clemente wall in right and an on-brand moment. Meanwhile, Pedro Ramirez extended his hitting streak to seven games and is in the midst of making a serious case to be an everyday player, or at minimum, something close to it.
Taillon’s struggles were unfortunately all too familiar, missing way out of the zone and in the heart of the zone. The lack of command combined with diminished fastball velocity and break on his secondaries has him in a rut that’s hard to see a way out of this season.
The Ankin Law: “Making it Personal” Player of the Game is Pedro Ramirez. He did more than you could ask for in giving Alex Bregman a day off at third base. Between him and Matt Shaw, the Cubs’ 10th position player spot creates quite a conversation (and more importantly, decisions) moving forward.
