I Saw the Savannah Bananas at Wrigley Field Yesterday – Here’s What I Thought About It ...Middle East

Holy over-stimulation, Batman!

I went to the Savannah Bananas game at Wrigley Field yesterday with my wife and 3.5-year-old son, Leo (who was the inspiration for my Cubs children’s book, by the way!). And for all the fun that we did have (and I’ll talk about below), wow … a lot is going on at these games. It’s like live scrolling TikTok in real life. Just song after song. Gimmick after gimmick. Explosion after explosion. And a little bit of baseball baked in between the madness.

If you’ve ever been to a WWE event, it’s basically that, but baseball. But also sometimes literally wrestling, too (a giant dude dressed as deep dish pizza put a guy dressed up as New York Style pizza through a folding table at home plate).

But I don’t think it’s a bad thing. For however overstimulating and insane it is at all times, at least it is real life. No screens. Outdoors. Etc. And that’s something I’m always striving towards for my kids, at least.

Plus, Wrigley Field was absolutely PACKED to the brim (even though this was the second Bananas game of the weekend), and it was ROCKING. Like loud screaming and even louder music the *entire time.*

We also arrived at Wrigley Field after parking down south on Clark, which means we walked right through the annual Mutache Barcrawl, which just added to the madness of the day.

But, yeah, I mean. It was still fun. Impossible to follow in any meaningful way, but entertaining nonetheless. And even the smaller gimmicks (like the baby race, pizza wrestling match, hottest mom challenge, and shirtless big guy rolling race) kept our attention and made us laugh.

But the real prize, I think, is the bigger draws.

On Friday night, the Savannah Bananas had Ben Zobrist come out on his bicycle.

… And they brought even bigger guns out on Saturday.

Kerry Wood took the mound, throwing a trick pitch (behind the back eephus for a “strike”).

A “shirtless” David Ross took an at-bat and was clearly having fun.

And they even re-created the famous scene from Rookie of the Year, when Henry Rowengartner throws the ball back to home plate from center field … with the real Henry Rowengartner!

Is any of this “baseball” …? No, of course not. Will I ever go back to this again? Nah. Probably not. My head is still spinning 24 hours later. But I am glad I went, and I can easily see why families (of slightly older kids) would have a ball. It’s like being at the Circus or a Harlem Globetrotters game. Absurd, but an experience.

And to that end, I don’t really get all the hate for it I’ve seen online. I don’t think this is meant to be anything more than some crazy, wacky fun at the ballpark. As a one-time thing, it was a good enough day for my son and me (though his favorite part was singing “Go, Cubs, Go,” because he’s awesome and knows the Cubs are where it’s really at).
