Star Trek directors Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley have provided a long-awaited update on the new film – the first since it was confirmed in 2025.
News that a new Star Trek movie was in development was announced by Paramount last November, but no further details – including a release date – were revealed.
During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con, the writer-director duo confirmed that a script is in progress, admitting they think "people will be surprised".
The movie will focus on a group of brand-new characters, moving away from reuniting casts from previous Star Trek projects. It will also be set in an entirely new time period, but the duo have insisted that, despite the changes, the film will satisfy fans.
"It won't be the characters that you've seen previously in your Star Trek movies," said Goldstein. "So there'll be a new sort of take on that, and I think it'll probably be a little further into the future than we've been before."
He added: "Everything we take on, what draws us to it is the opportunity to do a different spin on something that you've seen done before, and that's our hope with this is to satisfy the fans, but also bring people in who may not consider themselves lovers of Star Trek, and surprise them."
Last year, Deadline reported that Goldstein and Daley's film would be a completely new take on the Star Trek universe and not connected to any previous or current television series, movie or previous movie development projects.
The new time period could suggest moving beyond The Next Generation/Deep Space Nine/Voyager era of the 24th century, or even further, past the 32nd century of Discovery and Starfleet Academy.
Goldstein and Daley first made their writing debut with the film Horrible Bosses, later penning Spider-Man: Homecoming and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.
They made their directorial debut with Vacation before later collaborating on Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Their next project is Mayday, a Cold War action comedy for Apple TV, starring Ryan Reynolds and Kenneth Branagh.
