Authorities have identified the 14-year-old who was killed in a collision involving an e-moto and an SUV Tuesday night in suburban Wauconda.
According to authorities, the crash occurred in the 500 block of North Main Street just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, with police called to the scene after an e-moto and an SUV were involved in a collision that left both vehicles with severe damage.
Police at the scene found the teen lying on the roadway, and he was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office has identified the teen as 14-year-old Wauconda resident Tyler Waldal, who attended school in the area. His death was caused by blunt force trauma according to an autopsy report.
School officials are mourning Waldal’s loss after he was identified by authorities, remembering him as a “kind” and “energetic student” who was preparing to attend high school in the fall.
“Tyler was a responsible boy from kindergarten up,” Wauconda Grade School Principal Debbie Monroe said in a statement. “He cared for others and was kind to everyone. He was an energetic student who was looking forward to being on our football team and beginning high school. We care deeply for his parents and family, and our thoughts remain with them and our entire community during this difficult time.”
According to Wauconda police, Waldal was riding an e-moto in the 500 block of North Main Street just before 10 p.m. when a collision occurred with an SUV. Both the e-moto and SUV suffered “significant damage” in the crash, but circumstances of that collision are still under investigation.
The teen was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later, according to fire officials.
The driver of the SUV and a passenger were uninjured, police said. Both are cooperating with the investigation into the incident.
No charges have been filed in the case, and an investigation into the circumstances of the crash remains underway.
“Our hearts are with the young man’s family, friends, classmates, and everyone affected by this unimaginable tragedy,” Chief John Combs said in a statement. “As e-motos and other similar electric vehicles become more common on our roadways, we urge parents and riders to understand their capabilities, follow traffic laws, wear proper safety equipment, and recognize the serious risks involved.”
