2026 has certainly been a big year for horror, with the likes of Backrooms and Obsession generating massive buzz and even bigger box-office numbers.
And now, things look set to be getting even bigger for the genre, as the first trailer for upcoming supernatural film Other Mommy, starring Oscar winner Jessica Chastain, has now been released.
The film is based on Josh Malerman's 2024 novel Incidents Around the House, and, according to its synopsis, follows Bela (played by Arabella Olivia Clark), "an 8-year-old girl living in a home with marital problems," who "confronts a sinister entity that comes out of her closet".
The synopsis continues: "The presence, who she calls "Other Mommy," becomes increasingly threatening to her and her family."
In the eerie trailer, Chastain's character Ursula arrives home during her lunch break to see her daughter, Bela. Ursula asks where Bela's father is, and Bela mentions that he's asleep. She asks if she should wake him up, to which Ursula says no.
The pair then begin to prepare lunch, but it quickly becomes apparent that the mother Bela is talking to might not be the one she knows...

View oEmbed on the source websiteAlthough Chastain is perhaps best known for her roles in The Help, The Eyes of Tammy Faye (for which she won her Oscar), Zero Dark Thirty and Molly's Game, the upcoming film marks her first return to the horror genre since her 2019 role in It Chapter Two, where she played the adult version of Beverly Marsh.
Other Chastain horror ventures include the 2013 supernatural horror Mama and Guillermo del Toro's gothic 2015 film Crimson Peak.
The new October-bound horror flick is directed by Rob Savage, who previously helmed the likes of Host (2020), Dashcam (2021) and Boogeyman (2023). James Wan (Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring) is set to executively produce, alongside Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Savage, Josh Malerman and Ryan Lewis.
