Can you believe we’re almost at the end of the Harry Potter series getting their illustrated versions? Levi Pinfold takes on the development of the last two novels, starting with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince released today, Oct. 6, 2026.
The first four books had been illustrated by Jim Kay, although due to the length of the fifth book, Neil Packer stepped in as a guest illustrator. When Kay stepped down from the project to focus on his health, there were a lot of questions about who would take on the final two books. Pinfold was shocked to be offered the opportunity.
The keepsake edition will fit perfectly with the first five books that have already been illustrated. Pinfold captures the heart of Harry and his friends’ sixth year at Hogwarts. This isn’t his first rodeo with the universe, either, as he took on creating the artwork for each of the four House editions of Harry Potter. Not only did he bring the house crests to life on the front covers, but he was involved in the creation of the character portraits and chapter illustrations for each of the four houses.
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince brought back a plotline from the second book, Chamber of Secrets. J.K. Rowling had originally intended to reveal Voldemort’s involvement with the Horcruxes during the second book, but it fit the darker turn that the sixth offered instead. And it became the fastest-selling book in history at the time, seeing 6.9 million copies in the United States alone on July 16, 2005.
The artwork was a huge undertaking, and it’s turned out stunning. The task for Pinfold was to bring the storylines to life, and there is certainly a realism that you’ll see from the preview of the book:

After getting the initial call and being excited about the idea of illustrating the final two Harry Potter books, Pinfold then thought about “All that work, and it was an enormous weight. I just had this memory of all Jim’s books lined up, thinking they’re such big shoes to fill.”
In a Q&A, he shared more about how he kept going with this enormous project, “Having the opportunity to just sink into something for such a long period of time and to do so much work around it. I mean, I think you just don’t get that opportunity to spend so long and do so much.”
Much of the work was done at the school gates, as he had children age two and zero when he initially got the project, and they’ve grown with the art he’s created. This has led to a fun Easter egg for his family, “I think I cast my kids as the house-elves! I didn’t mean to, but they have exactly the same facial expressions. There’s a picture of Dobby and Kreacher, and that’s just their relationship in a nutshell. So it’s very, very funny, but I suppose purely by accident.”
