Authorities in suburban Vernon Hills have arrested a 26-year-old man on accusations he made false terrorist threats against multiple institutions and individuals.
According to police, Ryan Kang is facing two felony counts of falsely making a terrorist threat in connection to the incidents, which involved a local school, a local church and several individuals.
According to the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, multiple individuals flagged “concerning social media posts” penned by Kang that allegedly threatened Vernon Hills High School, Willow Creek Church, and several “out-of-state individuals.”
During the course of the investigation, police determined the suspect did not “have the means or ability to carry out any attack,” but Kang allegedly admitted to writing the posts when questioned by officers.
After that investigation, he was arrested and now faces multiple felony charges, with prosecutors seeking to detain him pretrial.
“Social media and internet threats have become far too common,” Vernon Hills Police Chief Patrick Kreis said in a statement. “These criminal acts disrupt our daily lives and promote fear in our communities. They will not be tolerated.”
Police say Kang could potentially face up to 15 years in prison on the charges.
